Flexibilty in Golf
Many people take up golf in their later years as a form of exercise. One of the first things someone realizes is that golf requires a good amount of flexibility and strength to be able to drive balls long distances. This can be a difficult task for someone who has spent decades at a desk and hasn’t kept in regular shape. The human body goes through a full rotation at the hips, knees and shoulders on each drive and any weakness or stiffness will shorten the shot and decrease accuracy.
Yoga is a great way to increase flexibility and strength for your golf game. By its very nature yoga focuses on the core of the body, which is the back and abdominal area. The most basic poses of yoga will increase flexibility and strength in these key areas and over time will improve a players swing and game. Downdog and updog do a great job of increasing back flexibility and strength as well as arm and shoulders. Coupled with Warrior I and Warrior II the body can really experience stretches that will assist in golf. Integrate some upper body twist and the hip and joints will begin to see more movement. Of course your body needs to be in good health before attempting these
exercises but integrating a yoga practice with your game can definitely improve your swing over time.
